Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire

In the very beginning of the 1990s, the town of Terrasson, overlooking the Vézère and endowed with its natural and built heritage, decided to make a commitment to developing its tourism. At the same time, the idea of creating a structuring site that would be the driving force behind the town's development began to take shape.

The idea to create a contemporary garden over 6 ha (14 ac) in the heart of the historic district - proposed by the mayor, Pierre Delmon - was an effort to put culture and tourism in the heart of the town's development, and to complement the treasures of the Périgord noir and the Aquitaine region. It was a real challenge for a town that had been principally industrial up to that point.

This challenge, faced and met by the town Council, first took the shape of a contest won by Kathryn Gustafson and the architect Ian Ritchie, confirming the international ambition of the project. From that point on, creating Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire was a work of art!

In 1997, Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire opened its gates to the public, and today it welcomes some 40,000 visitors from April to October.

To create a tourist attraction from scratch does not necessarily imply destroying the existing setting. Au contraire! The gardens are ideally located accross from the historic district of Terrasson. This natural site already featured panoramic terraces and a botanical diversity that were favourable for a quality creation.
Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire was waiting to take shape.

The Vézère valley is inextricably linked to the origins of humanity.
The creators of Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire quite naturally based their idea on this uniqueness. The gardens to be created in Terrasson would conjure up the history of humanity through the history of gardens.

The strength of Kathryn Gustafson's idea - considering the complexity of the history of gardens - was to present "fragments" of this history by making allusive reference to the universal myths that involve nature. Thus Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire is a collection of theme gardens.

But how is it possible to make reference to such a vast number of cultural models?
Quite simply by alluding to the invariant elements of humanity's gardens. Water, earth, the Wind, perspectives... These are some of the gardens' elements that symbolize nature in all its facets.

To be rooted in the Périgord and integrated into the landscape while making use of highly technological materials and very contemporary architectural lines: this was a challenge. These gardens proved to be up to the challenge! The combination of native elements and modernity reveals the full character of these gardens.

...That is how Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire came into being.
A pure extract of imagination, these gardens are made to inspire dreams.
With so much aesthetic and poetic research, its designers have brought us the pleasure of a great garden...And a pleasant stroll.
