The Bell

In 1708, Jean de Reilhac de Montmège is a godfather of a bell given by the abbey of Holy Sour of Terrasson, who will be melted in 1882.

We thought first of all that this bell, the most ancient of Périgord, resulted from ruins of the castle of Muratel close to La Villedieu and represented an ancient iron helmet, of minor or Gallic riderIn. In 1897, Marquis de Fayolle went to see this spot bell and clarified that this object had nothing of the shape of a Gallic helmet and consisted of two patches of wrought iron, having the elliptic shape and bound by the height by means of a fold. She was certainly very old, But by no means made of patches of sheet steel as us had said to him.

This bell is 0,45 m high and 0,39 m bright. She is drilled by four holes intended to give him more tone. By the technic of its manufacturing, the bell of La Villedieu would date from the Merovingian time, as those of Cologne and Noyon. The bell of La Villedieu would result from the monastery of Terrasson, which at the top Middle Ages created an oratory in the classic art villa which it possessed on the north bank of the Vézère. In 1165, Saint-Sour possessed Holy Marie of la Villedieu.
